James,

We are not the IUB, nor high school class council, nor the girl scouts. All three things you have probably been in. Therefore, we will not do any philanthropy...ever.

Ryan and James:

I actually believe that some level of philanthropy is appropriate. The form that our philanthropy takes, however, is up for debate.

The primary goal for the ISS as a whole should be to facilitate the elections process, and seriously plan for major debates on this campus. I think we should host the various Illinois Radio Network and CBS debates from a crumbling building, like Lincoln Hall.

Sincerely,

Daniel J. Nugent

I have several goals. I'd like outreach to rock the day of service. I want 7 day McKinley to be a reality, i think it's closer than even Danavi imagines. I want to revolutionize the budget letter process and have it work to its full potential. I want Cajindos to just keep rockin the GAC house. I want the legacy scholarship to pass, very very much. I want billy joe to get smacked around in the affirmative action debate. I hope we finish Academic Affairs Teaching Awards, voter registration reform, a campus police review board, and developing a plan for lower textbook prices. I'm hoping for a successful appointments process and for a semester of increased visibility for iss. These are just a few. Perhaps most importantly, my goal is to leave the next administration well prepared to continue the work we've started and with all the info they need to start new projects

We have started a lot of things this year and have made several important differences on campus already, not least of which was keeping the Assembly Hall under Student Affairs and keeping the speed limit at 25.

We have made significant advances in the discipline reform issue, and now we need to push those reforms though the rather ponderous legislative process of the U of I. If I were to pick one goal, it would certainly be that.

Luckily I don't have to only pick one, and there are several goals we should pursue, including lobbying for both the budget and the various state legislative measures that would benefit students. We will also make gains to select a new VCSA and Police Chief that are responsive to the students. Building a relationship with the new Provost is also a priority.

Of course there are a ton of other things we need to do as well, and many great goals have already been listed here. Except for James' philanthropy goal, which is not what we do, we're student advocates first, IUB does a great job of putting on things like Boxs and Walls and the Spring Musical. Much as they should allow us to do our job, we should allow them to do theirs.

Philanthropy is good to the extent that it is PR and outreach work. Other than that, the ISS should work on projects that fulfill its mission. As cold as this sounds, we aren't here to help the starving children of Africa or the terminally ill children of America. We are here to serve the students at the University of Illinois. We can participate in other worthwhile programs as individuals. In my opinion, any ISS philanthropy work should be limited to the Outreach Committee.
